Bridge – Network Bridges

Summary: Network bridges are basically software devices that reduce the amount of “traffic” (traffic refers to the speed within the network) at a network boundary. For example, in a LAN (Local Area Network) a network bridge would reduce traffic by separating the data (in the data link layer of the network diagram) into two segments rather than just one long segment, as well as discarding that traffic or not. Some examples of bridges include an Ethernet Bridge which inspects data being received in the Ethernet frame of the network. Such inspections include where the data came from and its destination, where it is heading. Finally, here is a simple diagram of a router’s signal accessing that of a home TV through a wireless network bridge:
